An Ode to The Circus of Fashion

Tuesday, February 19, 2013

So if you are wondering about the title, than you probably haven't read
The Circus of Fashion by Suzy Menkes that was in the NY Times this past Sunday.
It's definitely thought provoking and I have to agree with a lot of what she has to say.
To summarize, she is basically stating that bloggers and editors are often dressing simply to get noticed, for "fame". They wear the most ridiculous of outfits in the hopes of being photographed.
I definitely feel like there are a handful out there that throw on a bunch of high-end designer duds and think it looks good solely for the name...but in reality they just look like, well, "clowns".
Well this is my "look at me" outfit. This skirt is ridiculous to wear out and about but actually there is something about the look I love.
What was stated in the comments was what annoyed me the most. A lot of people saying that blogging has just turned into "look at me, look at me". Well yes, you are looking at me, but I have always felt and continue to feel that my blog is about clothing, styling, inspiration..not about me.
Yes, when I post my "features" that is about me but why can't I feel proud and share that?
There is no better way to show someone how to style something or to give someone ideas on how to wear something then to well...put a look together on someone.
Since I don't have a couple of models handy on a daily basis that falls on me...
Anyway read the article and I would love to hear your thoughts.
Oh and one more thing..It is also insulting to say that we just push whatever we are given.
I have denied a lot of company's because I did not feel that they fit with my style and I am sure I am not alone..I support the ones that do..sue me.

I completely agree with you, the comments were really harsh, BUT some people do wear a lot of ridiculous things just to get attention, But that skirt you have on is perfectly fine ! I love it and will wear it.

very interesting article Sheree. thank you for sharing it.

I don't know one thing about the fashion industry. What I can surmise, from the tone of the article, is the author sounds foolish by comparing today to the 1980's.. which was over THREE decades ago. There may be valid points that I can't begin to comprehend about the dilution of the fashion industry, but the "true, elite fashion industry" better find a way to differentiate themselves, in TODAY'S environment, rather than having elitist pitty talk smack parties on "the masses" that have flocked to fashion.

Oh sheree.... This is edgy, glamorous...... And so you!!! It pains me to say that yes i did agree with some of the points she made, BUT throwing us all in one superficial bubble was pretty demeaning and uncalled for. All people who blog aren't the same, that's like saying all blondes are idiots......some of us just love and appreciate fashion as an art form and like to share that......and yes there are a lot of us that turn down free stuff all the time because it's not something we can get behind....... So in the nicest proverbial sense.......suck it Suzy bahahaha

I love that skirt. You look fantastic. I have an orange one that I have been dying to wear. Great inspiration.

I agree with you that some bloggers do that, but there are always people, regardless of their "profession", that are attention seekers.

I have to say, I love this look, too! As far as the article, I say the following: fashion is FUN, and you have given me a lot of ideas that have made getting dressed more fun for me! Period!

Sure, this skirt is probably not for every day wear, but it's definitely gorgeous on you. And I agree, not all bloggers are the "look at me" type. I'm sure there are some, but not the majority. We all have our own reasons for blogging and some of us just like clothes!

I'm not very fashion savvy and I don't know the lingo so I'm just going to say what I thought when I saw your outfit today.. FIERCE! xo from Texas

Sheere, I love your dress. It is sometimes exaggerated, bold and brave, but always with an aesthetic balance, that fascinates me. I think the blog is a way to communicate with the world through words or images, which show you how to understand the style. I like, when I do not love what you present, I will go, it's that easy. I have a problem, I get a lot of spam from your blog. It's not your fault, but you would comment.

Ugh fashion week has become a circus. half of the people that show up look like they threw on everything in their closet. It's all about getting noticed and who's who.

ANYWAY LOOOOOVVVEEE this skirt. Perfect color.

I've read this article, so what can I say) Honestly for me much more interesting to watch "Circus" than catwalk) I'm getting lots of inspiration from bloggers and editors)

I agree with you, why can't we have a little joy in sharing something we love, that'd what I'm doing on my blog anyway not seeking attention.
I am in love with this skirt, the colour is amazing as is the style. I know what you neSn though hard to wear it for everyday.

I completely agree with what you said...

Being true to who you are and not letting your surroundings effect you is sometimes though.
I've experienced that lately...

Anyway, before I break into a huge novel, let me just comment on how beautiful this outfit is!! I love love love it sheree!!! So so much!!

Wow. What an article! Have you ever seen the fashion documentary The Tents (I think that's the name...) It talks about Fashion Week and how people get dressed up, but portrayed it as a special event that one would get dressed up for. I mean if you're going to go balls out with an outfit, might as well do it for Fashion Week.

knocked up fabulous

OMG that article..definitely thought-provoking!! I've definitely refused to work with brands as well- I'll only represent something that I wear in every day life...and my outfits are part of who I am--they totally reflect my personality. I know that yours do too. I so LOVE this look- that green skirt is amazing- I seriously gasped when I saw the photo on instagram yesterday!!

Really good points, Sheree. This article seemed out of touch and uncalled for and the comments even worse. I remember when I first started blogging, I was at dinner with a group of friends and someone said that they "hated" bloggers... they didn't realize I was one. I had to laugh it off and take it with a grain of salt because those who knock it don't understand what blogging is all about. Blogging, specifically fashion blogging, is a way to showcase your personal style in a creative outlet and connect with others. It is about discovering your own voice through fashion and yes, sometimes having A LOT of fun with your outfits. What is fashion, if it not meant to be fun. Jean Paul Gaultier, Alexander McQueen and any other visionary fashion designer would probably think this article was insulting. SO THERE!
